VAL MIKHAYLOV

I’m a Montréal-based cinematographer and VFX artist working across narrative, documentary, music video and commercial production. My path into filmmaking began in post, and that still shapes the way I approach a set: I think about blocking, lensing, light, movement, editing, color and the final frame as parts of the same visual idea. Over more than a decade, I’ve moved between camera, editing, color and VFX, which gives me a practical understanding of what an image needs both in production and after the shoot. I’m especially drawn to performance-driven work, atmosphere and images that feel deliberate rather than decorative. I like collaborating closely, solving visual problems early, and carrying a project’s visual language from the first conversation through the finished image.
